Teaching Philosophy

“In education it isn’t how much you have committed to memory or even how much you know. It’s being able to differentiate between what you do know and what you don’t. It’s knowing where to go to find out what you need to know and it’s knowing how to use the information you get.” – William Feather

Aligning with Dr. Patricia Benner’s theory “From Novice to Expert,” I want to encourage students that they can rise to any challenge or difficulty as a nurse with awareness and recognition that their learning is an evolutionary process. As an educator and mentor it is my job to facilitate students to use critical thinking in learning situations and nursing practice. Students must also be able to incorporate evidence-based practice learned in the classroom and translate that knowledge to practice for optimal patient outcomes. I believe it is necessary to use multimodal teaching methods in order to reach my students. I use case studies, reading assignments, lecture, and open discussion when teaching because students have different learning styles and you must be able to connect with each student for them to be successful.
